Commentary: The 1982 varsity volleyball team
was the first ever in the sport at Wilmington High
School. First year coach Doug Anderson brought up
eleven girls from the school's club program. Led by
senior co-captains Karen Rowe & Debbie Mottolo
the team played a tough 18 game schedule in the very
competitive MVC league. The 1st year record was 6
wins & 12 losses. Seniors Ellen Tighe, Kim Bennett,
Cheryl Branscombe, Kim Huebner, Beth Miano, Ka-
ren Butt, Denise McGlaughlin, and Lisa Rudnicki
were members of the varsity and were joined by
junior Janet Maggliozzi. The team was enthusiastic
and two seniors received end of the year honors as
selected by the conference coaches. Karen Rowe was
chosen as an all-conference performer and Kim
Huebner received honorable mention selection.

Commentary: The 1982 season saw the Wilming-
ton's Girls Cross-Country team attain it's best record
in history, 5-3 losses to Billerica (7pts.), Lowell
(5pt.s), and undefeated League Champion Haverhill
(one skinny point) were the only blemishes on a very
fine record. Victories were earned over Lawrence,
Chelmsford, Methuen, and Andover (each for the
first time) and arch rival Tewksbury. Honors are the
following: 5th place finish Northern Area Meet, 6th
place finish in Catholic Memorial, 9th place in State
Division II. All were best performances by the girls.
Captain Mary McNaughton and Lisa Desforge were
named to the league team and Mary attained all state
honors following her 4th place finish in the state
championship meet.

:<Sm

Commentary: a near disastrous 0-4 start seemed to
indicate a most difficult year for the Boys Cross-
country team, but such was not to be the case.
Successive victories over Lawrence, Dracut, Tewks-
bury, and Greater Lawrence Regional (by 3 pts.) sur-
prised many people, including Coach Mr. Kelley, and
evened their record at 4-4. Darin Mather, Jim Wal-
lace, and Steve Stokes all were named to the small
school division of the Merrimack Valley all-star
teams. They will all be returning next year.

Commentary: The 1982 Soccer Season could be
best termed a relative success. Although, the team's
record was 6-7-5 they upset several major opponents

Commentary: The 1982 Field Hockey Team en-
joyed a very successful season. As Merrimack Valley
Conference Champions with a 12-1-3 record, they
advanced to the Northern Mass. Division I Semi-
finals losing to Acton-Boxborough 1-0 in O.T.

Teamwork, dedication, and fancy stickwork charc-
terized this groups personality. The leadership of
only six seniors helped inspire other team members
to pursue excellance in their skill development.

Annette Antinarelli and Kristen Pepe, our managers,
tallied in the books some forty goals for our team.
Goalie Mary Linehan saved all but six shots from our
opponents. All-Conference honors were awarded to
seniors: Ann Ryan, Cara Capodanno, Michelle Di-
Girolamo, Debbie Zambernadi and Mary Linehan.
Captain Ann Ryan was the leagues leading scorer
with eighteen goals, seven assits. Senior: Alice Mc-
Namara, Juniors: Sandra Crowley Cheryl Evans,
April Smallidge, Joan Sullivan, Karen Coville Steph-
anie Briggs, and Sophomores: Kathy Robinson and
Janet Crowley rounded off our Varsity squad.

The Junior Varsity accomplished a 10-3-3 record
(thanks to the fine ex. of the Var.)

Commentary: The 1982 Football Team deserves
alot of credit for this season's effort. Although we are
one of the smallest teams in the conference, our
young men managed to finish third in a field of 12
teams with a 7-3 record. This includes big victories
over perennial powerhouses Dracut and Chelmsford.

Several Wilmington players received honors for their
exceptional play during the season. Co-capt Ed 01-
shaw was named to the Division II Globe All Scho-
lastic Team, Merrimack Valley All Conference
Team, was chosen Player of the Year by the Lowell
Sun, and was picked to play in the prestigious
Shriners All Star game.

Co-capt Jon Nolan was named to the Merrimack
Valley All Converence Team and the Lowell Sun All
Star Team.

Ed Olsen, Bob Ducharme, George Kelley, and Char-
lie Athanasia were also named to the Lowell Sun All
Star Team.

Other seniors who made the season a great success
were Steve Hancox, Dave Strand, Brian Kavanaugh,
John Blaisdell, Jay Rowe, Will Baldwin, David M.
Sullivan, Brian Ouellette, David L. Sullivan, and
Chris Tentindo.

Commentary: The third year of track participation
in the MVC Winter League proved very rewarding
for the girls. The lone victory was at the expense of
Lawrence, but perennial powers such as Methuen,
Andover, Billerica and Chelmsford discovered this
years version of the Wildcats was a force to be aware
of.

Projection: For four years, Coach Cullen has consis-
tently brought the Wild cat Hockey team to the state
tournament, and he has no intentions of missing it
this year. The team has already jumped out with an
impressive 10-2 record. Captains Ed Olson, Bob
O'Connell, Ray Durling and Kevin Smith hope to
take the team to the state tourney. The team plans to
put on an exciting season for the Wild cat fans.

Projection: As a first year Varsity Gymnastics
team, the girls have made a good showing. After
winning their first meet, they have consistently
scored in the mid 80's. They have been working hard
to build up their team to a competative level within
the MVC. They are a young team consisting of fresh-
men, sophomores and juniors, with high hopes for an
even more successful team next year. The Juniors
are: Lisa Gidari (co-captain), Lesa Hall, Donna Win-

Commentary: The 1982 wrestling season brought only
marginal success for the Wildcat grapplers. The cats
finished the dual meet season with a 5-10-1 overall re-
cord. The end of the season tournaments were fruitful
for the team. During the M.V.C. Tournament Paul
Bossi(157) and Dave Hanson (UNL) placed third in
their perspective weight class. At the Division II North
Sectional Tournament Frank Carta (128) placed second.
Dave Hanson placed third and Chuck Monteforte (121)
placed fourth all qualifing for the States. Frank Carta
placed fourth at the Division II State Tournament, in
his weight class.

A Gentleman And A Scholar . . .

There is a book, cover worn, that lies on a desk in
WHS. Carefully placed with its cover away from the
sun's glare, it rests now when once it was lovingly
used for refinement of the mind.

Daily schedules, lesson plans; tests corrected, waiting
to be returned; these things are testaments to the life
of a great man. Mr. Keady, nurturing young minds
and helping them to grow, managed somehow to ex-
press warmth while remaining the quintessential
master. Loved by those who knew him well, that
occasional flicker of humour which caused his eyes to
sparkle could make a dreary day sunny again. The
astutest teachers never abstained from consulting
him, for he found the secret of true genious; he knew
when to look beyond himself for an answer.

Never fitting a mold, he struck out for the sake of his
students in his own philosophical way. Infinite pa-
tience was his prototype, unless he sensed his stu-
dents were not giving their all. But infinite respect
and the desire for his praise kept them working dili-
gently.

The class of 1983 has left, but somewhere in the halls
of WHS Mr. Keady slowly makes his way to class,
and picking up his book he muses about today's lec-
ture.
